The Security Council is the executive and the most important organ of the United Nations.
→ It consists of five permanent members, viz; the USA, Russia, Great Britain. France and China as well as ten non-permanent members. The non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for a term of two years.
→ It is entrusted the responsibility of maintaining world peace and security.
→ The decisions in the Council are taken by majority of nine, including the five permanent members.
→ The permanent members have been given 'Veto power in the decision-making process of the Council.
→ It has been given very wide powers to maintain peace and take disciplinary action against the erring nation.
→ It tries to resolve disputes by negotiations, failing which it imposes economic sanctions and, as a last resort, takes military action against the erring nations.
→ It makes recommendations to the General Assembly on the issue of admission of new members, appointment of the Judges of the International Court of Justice and the Secretary-General.
