What are the main steps in aerobic respiration? Where does it take place?

Answer

There are two main stages of oxygen respiration-glycolysis and Krebs' cycle. Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell and does not require O₂, whereas the Krebs' cycle occurs in the mitochondria 2 and requires O2. Glycolysis occurs in the same way in both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Under glycolysis, two molecules of 3 carbon pyruvic acid are produced from one molecule of 6 carbon sugar. At the end of glycolysis there is also a net production of two ATP molecules. These pyruvic acid molecules enter the mitochondria under the Krebs' cycle. The reactions of formation of acetyl Co.A are a connecting link between glycolysis and the Krebs' cycle. Acetyl Co.A goes under the Krebs' cycle. Due to complete oxidation, CO2 and H2O are finally formed and 38 ATP molecules are formed.
