Question
What happen when sodium salt of fatty acids react with sodalime?

Answer

When sodium salt of fatty acids is treated with sodalime (mixture of NaOH and CaO ) then alkane will form with one carbon less than carboxylic acid. This reaction is called decarboxylation reaction.
$\begin{array}{l} \underset{\text { Sodium ethanoate }} {CH _3 COO ^{-} Na ^{+} }+ NaOH \xrightarrow[\Delta]{ CaO } \underset{\text { Methane }}{CH _4}+ Na _2 CO _3 \end{array}$
Similarly different acids form other alkanes.
