A freshly prepared mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and concentrated nitric acid in the ratio of 3 : 1 is called an aqua regia (Latin meaining 'royal water'). Aqua regia is a highly corrosive, fuming liquid. Many metals along with noble metals like gold and platinum can be dissolved in aqua regia solution.
