Question
What is significant figures? Explain.

Answer

The number of significant figures in purely obtained result of measurement is called significant figures. Therefore, in any measurement the significant digit is number of digits which are known with certainity and there is an uncertain digit along with them.
Ex. In 11.2 ml the digit 11 is certain and digit 2 is uncertain and last digit has uncertainity of $\pm 1$. Hence 11.2 ml has 3 significant figures.
