"Development that meets the need of the present generation without compromising the ability of the future generation, to meet their own needs" is known as sustainable development. It can be achieved by:
- Decreasing the absolute poverty of the poor by providing long lasting livelihood that are secure.
- Resource depletion should be minimal and utilization be optional
- Human population be limited to a level within the carrying capacity of the environment.
- Technological progress should be input efficient and not input consuming.
- Renewable resources should be extracted on a sustainable basis. Inefficiencies which crop up from pollution should be speedily checked upon.
- Rate of depletion of non-renewable resources should be lesser than the rate of their creation.
