Question
What is the effect of reducing volume on the following system?
$2\text{C}(\text{s})+\text{O}_2\rightleftharpoons2\text{CO}(\text{g})$

Answer

On reducing volume, pressure will increase. According to Le-Chatelier principle, equilibrium will shift to the side where number of moles of gas can be increased. In the above reaction, equilibrium will shift in forward direction.
