Evans had made a master plan to escape from prison while giving the O-Level German Examination, One of his friends posed as the Reverend McLeery and came to invigilate him. Evans remained in prison as the wounded priest and was taken by the officials who didn't recognise him due to his cropped hair and false beard. He was able to dupe the Governor and was able to take a ride with detective Carter, by fooling them that he knew where Evans was. He escaped from their clutches by pretending to be sick and when they called for an ambulance to take him to Radcliffe Hospital, he escaped with his friends and reached his destination - the hotel Golden Lion located in Chipping Norton in Newbury.
