Question
Why aluminium is used in aluminothermic process?

Answer

Aluminium has great affinity for oxygen. Thus, it acts as a very good reducing agent. Moreover huge energy is released during this process. This process is used in the extraction of chromium and manganese from their oxides and also in thermite welding.
$ Cr_{2}O_{3}+2Al \xrightarrow{\Delta} Al_{2}O_{3} + 2Cr $.
