Why is acrylic considered as a cheap substitute of wool?

Acrylic is a man-made fibre. Natural wool and the clothes (for example, sweaters) made from it are quite expensive. Acrylic is a soft lightweight fibre which appears to resemble natural wool. The cost of acrylic is low when compared to the cost of natural wool. Therefore, acrylic can be considered as a cheap substitute of wool.
