It can be a source of economic growth and prosperity due to larger population of workers relative to non-workers. This is referred to as the demographic dividend. India is in the second phase of demographic transition wherein its birth rate is high but the death rate is going down. The birth rate is falling only slightly but it still remains high whereas death rate is falling rapidly. There was an exception in the decade 1911-21 where growth rate declined because of influenza epidemic in 1918-19.
