Saprophytic phase is more sturdy and can survive even under extreme conditions. Further, a dominant saprophytic phase means that the gametophytic phase does not have to withstand the rigours of routine life enabling it to perform reproductive function in a more efficient way. Angiosperms, being the most evolved plant, have adopted to a dominant saprophytic phase because of this reason.
