Question
Write a note on tribal identities in India today with special reference to Jharkhand.

Answer

The tribal movements have been largely located in the tribal-belt in middle India, such as the Santhals, oraons, Hos, Mundas.
Birsa Munda, an adivasi, led a major uprising against the British.
Following are the main issues against which the leaders of the movement in Jharkhand agitated:
  1. Acquisition of land for mega irrigation projects and firing ranges.
  2. Collection of loans, rent and cooperative dues, which were resisted.
  3. Nationalisation of forest produce which they boycotted.
The main issue that bind tribal movement from different parts of the country is the alienation of tribals, from forest lands. In this respect ecological issues are central to tribal movements.

66% of India in 15-65 age group
Not only the bulk of India's population, nearly two-thirds, is in the working age group from 15-64 years, the median age of the country is still just 24 (even it's up from 22 a decade ago) making it a rather young country with a large potentially productive workforce. On both counts, however, there are wide variations across states.
While India might have a whopping 767.5 million in the working age group, the proportion, of working age population varies widely from a high of 74.3% in tiny Daman and Diu, to a low of 55% in Bihar where 40% of the population is in the 0-14 age group. It is the same in Uttar Pradesh, another high fertility state, here the working age population constitutes just 58.6% while children constitute 36% of the population. For India, the proportion of children (0-14 years) is 31%. In low-fertility states like Kerala and Tamilnadu, children constitute just 23% and 24% of the population. Of the larger states, Tamilnadu has the highest proportion of population in the working age, 69.8%.
In general, among the larger states, the list of states with a high proportion of the population in the working ages bracket overlaps quiet a lot with the-list of states generally considered among the more developed.

Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
Population growth always outstrips growth in production of subsistence resources; hence the only way to increase prosperity is by controlling the growth of population. Unfortunately, humanity has only a limited ability to voluntarily reduce the growth of its population (through ‘preventive checks’ such as postponing marriage or practicing sexual abstinence or celibacy). Malthus believed therefore that ‘positive checks’ to population growth- in the form of famines and diseases- were inevitable because they were nature’s way of dealing with the imbalance between food supply and increasing population. Malthus was also criticized by liberal and Marxist scholars for asserting that poverty was caused by population growth. Critics argued that problems like poverty and starvation were caused by the unequal distribution of economic resources rather than by population growth.
  1. What were the preventive and positive checks suggested by Malthus for controlling growth of population?
  2. Malthus was criticized by the liberal and Marxist scholars. Explain.
