Question
Write a short note on the force acting on a current-carrying conductor placed in an external magnetic field.
✓
Answer
Oersted discovered that a current - carrying conductor exerts a force on a compass needle (i.e., on small bar magnet) placed near it. Andre Ampere suggested that the reverse should also be true, i.e., a magnet must also exert an equal and opposite force on a currentcarrying conductor, experiments swpported this. $\rightarrow$ Thus, when a current-carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a force, except, when it is placed parallel to the magnetic field. $\rightarrow$ The force acting on a current-carrying conductor in magnetic field is due to the interaction between magnetic field (produced) due to the currentcarrying conductor and the external magnetic field in which the conductor is placed.
