The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act was enacted in $1958$ In this Act, provisions were also made for the preservation of antique art works, religious places and historical memorials. The Act ensured that no person or agency could undertake Archaeological excavation In India without the permission of the Government of India. This provision stopped clandestine excavation. The Department of Archaeological Survey of India was entrusted the responsibility of preservation and protection of $5000$ sites declared as ‘National Monuments’. The Department of Archaeology preserves the ruined or decayed sites. It takes suitable measures to protect the sites of cultural heritage from harm caused by air pollution or development projects. The Indian Treasure Trove Act, $1876$ makes it mandatory for the citizens to notify to the officer of the Archaeology Department discovery of any antique article while digging for a house, well, lake or field. Under the Act of $1972,$ the government collects information about private collection of antiques and other art pieces.
