The local (self) governments are classifie into $1.$ Rural and $2.$ Urban local government.
$1.$ Rural Local Government :
Three-tie Panchayati Raj is the present local governme in Gujarat. These three-tiers are:
$(1)$Gram Panchayat at the village level
$(2)$ Taluka Panchayat at the taluka level
$(3)$ Zilla Panchayat at the district level Each of these bodies have elected leadership and administrative head. The Sarpanch is the electe head of the Gram Panchayat. The responsibility village administration is entrusted to Talati-cun Secretary. At the taluka level, these are Talul Pramukh and Taluka Development Officer. At district level, there is Zilla Panchayat Pramuk and the District Development Officer.
$2.$ Urban Local Government :
The urban loc government is classified into the following three types
$(1)$ Municipality
$(2)$ Municipal Corporation for cities
$(3)$ Mahanagar Nigam for mega cities
Each of these bodies have elected ar administrative head. The Municipalities ha Pramukh and the Chief Officer. The Municip Councils and the Mahanagar Nigams have May and the Municipal Commissioner.
