Question
Write down the following activities in the correct order for a simple reflex arc:
  1. Impulse travels in the motor fibre.
  2. Impulse travels in the sensory fibre.
  3. Effector organ stimulated.
  4. Impulse crosses the synapse.

Answer

The pathway taken by nerve impulses in a reflex action is called a reflex arc. It is an automatic response to a stimulus. When a stimulus is given to a receptor, the receptors produce an impulse in the sensory fibre. The sensory fibre carries this message in the form of an electrical stimulus across the synapse. From the synapse, the impulse travels in the motor fibre and stimulates the effector organ to produce the desired response. The correct order for a simple reflex arc is:
(b) → (d) → (a) → (c).

X, Y, and Z are three animals. The animal X can fly but animal Y can only run on ground or walls. The forelimbs of animals X and Y have the same basic design but they are used for different purposes such as flying and running respectively. The animal Z became extinct an long time ago. The study of fossils of Z tells us that it had some features like those of X and some like those of Y. In fact, Z is said to form a connecting link in the evolutionary chain of X and Y.

Answer the following questions
The observations made by Swarali while doing the experiment are given below. Based on these write answers to the questions;
Swarali found that the light ray travelling from the denser medium to rarer medium goes away from the normal. If the angle of incidence (i) is raised by Swarali, the angle of refraction ( $r$ ) went on increasing. However, after certain value of the angle of incidence the light ray is seen to return back into the denser medium.

i. What is the specific value of $\angle i$ called?
ii. What is the process of reflection of incident ray into denser medium called?
iii. Draw the diagrams of three observations made by Swarali.
