At present, the Grand Trunk Road, built in the Mauryan era is at the base of a national highway, built in quadrilateral shape. It is the oldest and longest road of Asia. The Grand Trunk Road was first constructed during the time of Chandragupta Maurya. At that time, this road joined Tamralipti to Takshashila and Takshashila to central Asia. That means, it was expanded from the plains of Ganga to Gandhar. Shershah Sun reconstructed this road in the Mughal era. During the British rule, Governor General Dalhousie reconstructed this road from Kolkata to Peshawar.
