Answer
Correct option: B.
Both $A$ and $R$ are true but $R$ is the correct explanation of A . not the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A .
Explanation:
The term Old Regime is usually used to describe the society and institutions of France before 1789. In this regime, the monarch did not have the power to impose taxes according to his will alone. He had to call a meeting of the Estates-General (a political body) which would then pass his proposals for new taxes. The population of France rose rapidly between 1715 and 1789 which led to a rapid increase in the demand for foodgrains. Due to lack of supply to meet this demand, the prices of bread which was the staple diet of the majority rose rapidly. Most workers had fixed their wages which did not keep pace with the rising prices. The gap between the poor and the rich widened. Things became worse whenever drought or hail reduced the harvest. This led to a subsistence crisis, something that occurred frequently in France during the Old Regime.
