When the earth is not protected means यदा भूतलम् अरक्षितं तदा... in simple language. This kind of sentence structure is known as Bhav Saptami or Sati Saptami in Sanskrit.
It is our tradition to worship earth as "mother earth" and it is our duty to protect it. It is believed that whenever the worship of mother earth is avoided, calamities like drought, earthquake etc. occur.

दुर्भिक्षः means drought. Crops do not grow when there is shortage of rain so people do not get alms. People still talk about the horrible drought called chhappaniyo. The shortage of rain causes drought and make our life miserable.

स्वायम्भुवः मनुः was the first son of Brahma. He was the emperor of the earth. The name of his wife was Shatrupa. He had two sons-Priyavrat. and Uttanpad and two daughters-Akruti and Prasuti. Prasuti was married to Prajapati Daksh and Akruti with Prajapati Ruchi. Dhruva, the son of Uttanpad is known as star of Dhruva. It is said that Manu handed over his kingdom to his elder son Priyavrat.

There are five characters of puranas, like - सर्ग, प्रतिसर्ग, वंश, मन्वन्तर and वंशानुचरित् which includes the description of evolution of the earth, description of devastation of the earth, list of kings in surya dynasty and moon dynasty, description of happenings during the timespan between the existence of two Manus and description of characters of some valorous kings in particular dynasty. On the basis of सांख्यदर्शन, there is description of सत्व, रजस and तमस. The desscription also covers the list of the kings born in different dynasties since the evolution of the earth.
