शाङ्गरवः - यन्मिथः समयादिमां मदीयां दुहितरं भवानुपायंस्त तन्मया प्रीतिमता युवयोः अनुज्ञातम्। तदिदानीम् आपन्नसत्त्वा इयं प्रतिगृह्यतां सहधर्मचरणाय इति।
गौतमी - आर्य किमपि वक्तुकामा अस्मि। न मे वचनावसरोऽस्ति । कथम् इति -
नापेक्षितो गुरुजनोऽनया त्वया पृष्टो न बन्धुजनः ।
एकैकस्मिन्नेव चरिते भणामि किम् एकैकम् ॥
शकुन्तला - (आत्मगतम्) किं नु खल्वार्यपुत्रो भणति।
Answer
The King : What is the order of Lord Kanva?
Sharangarava : That "I accept that you married to my daughter with mutual consent. So now accept this pregnant lady for living life happily together."
Gautami : Arya! I want to say something though my words do not carry much importance. He did not expect from elders. Neither you have discussed with kiths and kins. When they behave like this with each other, what can be said?

शकुन्तला - (आत्मगतम्) पावकः खलु वचनोपन्यासः ।
शाङ्गरवः - कथम् इदं नाम। भवन्तः एव सुतरां लोकवृत्तान्तनिष्णाताः ।
राजा - किम् अत्रभवती मया परिणीतपूर्वा ।
शकुन्तलाः - (सविषादम्) हृदय, साम्प्रतं ते आशङ्का।
शाङ्गरवः - किं कृतकार्यद्वेषो धर्म प्रति विमुखता कृतावज्ञा।
Answer
The King : What is this all going on?
Shakuntala : (to herself) Oh, these words are like fire!
Sharangarava: Why do you say so? You are expert in social traditions.
The King : Have I married to this lady in the past?
Shakuntala : (with grief) Now your doubt is true!

शाङ्गरवः - मूर्छन्त्यमी विकाराः प्रायेणैश्वर्यमत्तेषु ।
राजा - विशेषेणाधिक्षिप्तोऽस्मि ।
गौतमी - जाते मुहूर्तं मा लज्जस्व । अपनेष्यामि तावत्तेऽवगुण्ठनम् । ततस्त्वां भर्ताभिज्ञास्यति ।
राजा - (विचारयन्स्थितः ।)
शाङ्गरवः - भो राजन्किम् इति जोषम् आस्यते ।

शकुन्तला - (अपवार्य) आर्यस्य परिणय एव सन्देहः। कुत इदानीं मे दूराधिरोहिण्याशा।
शारद्वतः - शकुन्तले वक्तव्यम् उक्तम् अस्माभिः। सोऽयम् अत्रभवानेवम् आह। दीयताम् अस्मै प्रत्ययप्रतिवचनम्।
शकुन्तला - (अपवार्य) इदम् अवस्थान्तरं गते तादृशेऽनुरागे किं वा स्मारितेन। (प्रकाशम्) पौरव युक्तं नाम ते इमं जनं समयपूर्वं प्रतार्य साम्प्रतम् ईदृशैरक्षरैः प्रत्याख्यातुम् ।
राजा - (कर्णौ पिधाय) शान्तं पापम्। किं मां पातयितुमीहसे।
Answer
The King : O sages! I thought a lot but I don't remember of marrying this lady.
Shakuntala : (bending one side) When Arya (king) has doubt about the marriage, what to speak of my expectations?
Shardhwat : Shakuntala, we have said whatever we wanted to. Now, you make him sure!

राजा - उदारः कल्पः ।
शकुन्तला - (मुद्रास्थानं परामृश्य) हा धिग्। अङ्गुलीयकशून्या मेऽङ्गुलिः ।
(इति सविषादं गौतमीम् अवेक्षते ।)
गौतमी - नूनं ते शक्रावताराभ्यन्तरे शचीतीर्थसलिलं वन्दमानायाः प्रभ्रष्टम् अङ्गुलीयकम् ।
राजा - (सस्मितम्) इदं तत्प्रत्युत्पन्नमति स्त्रैणम् ।
शकुन्तला - अत्र तावद्विधिना दर्शितं प्रभुत्वम् ।
Answer

शकुन्तला - नन्वेकस्मिन्दिवसे नवमालिकामण्डपे नलिनीपत्रभाजनगतम् उदकं तव हस्ते सन्निहितम् आसीत् ।
राजा - शृणुमस्तावत् ।
शकुन्तला - तत्क्षणे स मे पुत्रकृतको दीर्घापाङ्गो नाम मृगपोतक उपस्थितः । त्वयायं तावत्प्रथमं पिबत्वित्यनुकम्पिना उपच्छन्दित उदकेन। न पुनस्तेऽपरिचयात् हस्ताभ्याशम् उपगतः । पश्चात्तस्मिन्नेव मया गृहीते सलिलेऽनेन कृतः प्रणयः । तदा त्वम् इत्थं प्रहसितोऽसि सर्वः सगन्धेषु विश्वसिति । द्वावप्यत्रारण्यकाविति ।
राजा - एवम् अनृतमयवाद्मधुभिराकृष्यन्ते विषयिणः ।
Answer

गौतमी - महाभाग नार्हस्येवं मन्त्रयितुम्। तपोवनसंवर्धितोऽनभिज्ञोऽयं जनः कैतवस्य ।
राजा - तापसवृद्धे !
स्त्रीणामशिक्षितपटुत्वमानुषीषु
संदृश्यते किमुत याः प्रतिबोधवत्यः ।
प्रागन्तरिक्षगमनात्स्वमपत्यजातम्
अन्यैर्द्विजैः परभृताः खलु पोषयन्ति ॥
शकुन्तला - (सरोषम्) अनार्य ! आत्मनो हृदयानुमानेन पश्यसि। क इदानीम् अन्यो धर्मकञ्चुकप्रवेशिनः तृणच्छन्नकूपोपमस्य तवानुकृतिं प्रतिपत्स्यते ।
राजा - भद्रे ! प्रथितं दुष्यन्तस्य चरितम्। तथापीदं न दृश्यते।
शकुन्तला - सुष्ठु तावदत्र स्वच्छन्दचारिणी कृतास्मि । (इति पटान्तेन मुखमावृत्य रोदीति ।)
Answer
Gautami : O King! You should not speak like this. This poor girl has been brought up in the forest and she is ignorant of any trick or deceit.
The King : O old female saint! The cunningness among the females other than human beings is natural even though they are not taught about it. Then what to speak about cunning women? Cucooks leave their young ones in the nest to be brought up by other birds.
Shakuntala : (with anger) Why do you consider others according to your own imagination? Whoelse can imitate you who is wearing the garb of religion and like a well covered with straw?
The King : O respectful lady! The character of Dushyant is famous.
Shakuntala : Really I am being proved as a wanton here. She cries bitterly.
