What is meant by an urban settlement ? State its type based on the  functions.


Answer
Collective settlement is when many families and a large number of human beings come together and build their dwellings close to each other and start living in them permanently.
It has two sections: (1) Rural Settlements and (2) Urban Settlements.
Urban settlements:
People living in urban settlements derive their livelihood from secondary, tertiary, quadrant or fifth type of economic activities.
Their lifestyle is also very different from that of rural settlements.
The proportion and density of population is higher here as compared to rural settlements.
In everyday life, people use more and more machines or mechanical equipment.
Urban settlement functionality:
Functionality is the main activity of the colony.
Activity means economic activity.
The classification of cities by functionality is as follows:
1. Administrative Centers:

Kolkata, London, Rome, Gandhinagar etc.
2. Defense Centers:

Khadakwasla, Dehradun, Jodhpur, Kochi etc.
3. Cultural Centers:

Varanasi, Mecca, Vadodara, Jaipur, Lucknow etc.
4. Industrial Centers:

Jamshedpur, Kalgurli, Pittsburgh, Durgapur etc.
5. Business centers:

Winnipeg, Baghdad, Dusseldorf etc.
6. Transport Centers:

Rotterdam, Mumbai, Aden etc. 
In addition, the exchange and distribution are categorized as manufacturing centers, tourist centers, etc., depending on the functionality of the city.

(1) People living in rural settlements depend on primary activities like farming, mining, fishing, and vanilla activity.
(2) Fishing activity is of great importance in rural settlements established near sea, river or lake.
(3) The activity of aggregation of forest products is important in rural settlements developed near forest areas.
(4) Establishments established near mineral fields are associated with mining activity.
(5) Some rural settlements are associated with primary products.
  • There are ancillary activities like making tools, repairing machines, making handloom clothes, animal husbandry etc.
(6) Hive-shaped colonies are built in the wild to protect the human population from predators and potential enemies.
(7) Scattered settlements are found in mountainous regions, deserts and highlands.
  • The number of houses here is low.
  • The people who live here are connected to each other by a single cultural feature.
  • There are sporadic settlements in places where there are natural difficulties as well as less scope for economic activities.
(8) Rural settlements developed under different geographical conditions have some distinctive features. Like:
(1) A linear system is a settlement parallel to a river or canal.
(2) Cyclic colonies are formed in mountain tops or grazing areas.
(3) Triangular system settlements develop near the confluence of rivers.
(4) Sub-cyclic system settlements are formed on the banks of the river taking turns.
(5) If there is a high mountainous area in the middle, a colony with a nebula system is formed.
  • Thus, rural settlements carry out activities according to environmental conditions and physical conditions.
  • The formation of rural settlements follows a physio-cultural situation.

  • There are two divisions of collective settlements: (1) Rural Settlements and (2) Urban Settlements.
  • Rural settlements:
  • The size of rural settlements is small and their population is relatively small.
  • The people living here depend on basic activities like farming, mining, fishing, and vanilla activity.
  • Depending on the development system, rural settlements are subdivided as follows:
1. Rectangular settlement system:
  • Fertile plain areas have such settlements.
2. Linear Settlement System:
  • The arrangement of settlements here is parallel to the road, railway, river or canal.
3. Cyclic or semi-cyclic (circular) settlement system:
  • There are such settlements in lakes, dormant volcanoes, mountain tops or grazing areas.
4. Star-shaped settlement system:
  • There are such settlements in places where many roads converge.
5. Triangular settlement system:
  • There are such settlements at the confluence of rivers.
6. Subcircular settlement system:
  • There are such settlements on the banks of the river that takes turns.
7. Nebular Colonization System:
  • Usually there is a high mountainous area in the middle, and then there are such settlements around it.
