Maps are divided in two types as follows based on scales :

$(2)$ Scale based maps.

$(1)$ Atlas maps and
$(2)$ Wall maps.

Answer
The earth works as a magnet. A magnet which can move freely remains steady in north-south direction, because the magnetic field of the earth affects it. The magnetic south pole of the earth is near its geographical North Pole and the magnetic north pole of the earth is near its geographical South Pole. The geographical north and magnetic north of the earth are not at the same place. That is why the needle of the compass always points north-south direction.

If the scale of a map is less than $1 \ cm = 50 \ km$, it is known as a ‘large scale map’. Here, the $1 \ cm$ on the map is equal to $50 \ km$ of actual distance on the earth. More information is given in large scale map. Maps of a taluka, village or a city are examples of large scale maps.

$(4)$ A map is useful to study any continent, country, state, district, taluka, city or a village. Thus a map is useful as it is a source of geographical information.
