Question
A metre stick is held vertically with one end on a rough horizontal floor. It is gently allowed to fall on the floor. Assuming that the end at the floor does not slip, find the angular speed of the rod when it hits the floor.

Answer

Let the mass of the rod = m

Therefore applying laws of conservation of energy

$\frac{1}{2}\text{l}\omega^2=\text{mg}\frac{\text{l}}2{}$

$\Rightarrow\frac{1}{2}\times\text{M}\frac{\text{l}^2}{3}\times\omega^2=\text{mg}\frac{1}{2}$

$\Rightarrow\omega^2=\frac{\text{3g}}{\text{l}}$

$\Rightarrow\omega=\sqrt{\frac{\text{3g}}{\text{l}}}=5.42\text{rad/s.}$

A cricket bowler releases the ball in two different ways.
  1. Giving it only horizontal velocity, and
  2. Giving it horizontal velocity and a small downward velocity. The speed vs at the time of release is the same. Both are released at a height H from the ground. Which one will have greater speed when the ball hits the ground? Neglect air resistance.

Slowing down of neutrons: In a nuclear reactor a neutron of high speed (typically $10^7 m s ^{-1}$ ) must be slowed to $10^3 m s ^{-1}$ so that it can have a high probability of interacting with isotope ${ }_{92}^{235} U$ and causing it to fission. Show that a neutron can lose most of its kinetic energy in an elastic collision with a light nuclei like deuterium or carbon which has a mass of only a few times the neutron mass. The material making up the light nuclei, usually heavy water $\left( D _2 O \right)$ or graphite, is called a moderator.
