Question
Discuss the ortho and pyro silicates.
✓
Answer
Ortho silicates: The simplest silicates which contain discrete $\left[ SiO _4\right]^{4-}$ tetrahedral units are called ortho silicates or neso silicates. Examples: Phenacite $- Be _2 SiO _4\left( Be ^{2+}\right)$ ions are tetrahedrally surrounded by $O _2$ - ions). Olivine $-( Fe / Mg )_2 SiO _4($ $Fe ^{2+}$ and $Mg ^{2+}$ cations are octahedrally surrounded by $O ^{2-}$ ions).
Pyro silicates: Silicates which contain $\left[ Si _2 O _7\right]^{6-}$ ions are called pyro silicates (or) Soro silicates They are formed by joining two $\left[ SiO _4\right]^{4-}$ tetrahedral units by sharing one oxygen atom at one comer, (one oxygen is removed while, joining). Example: Thortveitite $- SC _2 Si _2 O _7$.
