  • Definition: “Intelligence is the mental powers required to adapt to any context of the environment or to shape or select it - Sternberg (1997)
  • Trinity Principle:
  • A man named Sternberg gave the theory of intelligence in 1985.
  • His theory consists of three components hence it is called the trinity theory.
  • Sternberg named this theory the theory of successful intelligence in 1990.
  • Elements of the trinity theory:
(1) Component IQ:
  • This type of intelligence has the power to think analytically. So it is also called analytical intelligence.
  • It has the ability to analyze, critique, compare, evaluate, measure, think logically.
(2) Empirical intelligence:
  • This intelligence includes new ideas, innovative creation, intuition, problem solving, etc.
  • So this intelligence is also called creative intelligence.
  • This intelligence includes imagination, creative innovation, fundamental research, and so on.
(3) Contextual intelligence:
  • This intelligence is the ability to adapt to the changing environment in practical life.
  • So this intelligence is also called practical intelligence.
  • Here the person tries to take advantage of the environment by overcoming his weakness.
  • Thus, according to Sternberg, every person has three components of intelligence.
