According to the Bhagavad Gita, yoga means "Samatva Yoga Uchchyate".
Which means maintaining stability of mind and health in the changing situation of life means yoga.
The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word "yuj".
Which means to connect.
Yoga is when one associates oneself with Atma or Paramatma.
Maharshi Patanjali has explained Ashtanga Yoga in Yogasutra.
These include Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.
Yama :
Eliminate the taboos in yourself.
There are five main components of Yama: Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya and Aparigraha.
Non-violence means lack of violence against all living beings.
Truth means not lying.
Asteya means to behave purely physically and mentally.
Celibacy is the control of the senses.
Abstinence means not storing more than you need.
Rule:
The rule is to follow the legislative matters in one's behavior.
There are five main components: defecation, contentment, penance, self-study and devotion to God.
Defecation means internal and external cleansing of the body.
Satisfaction means understanding what is achieved.
Penance means to enable the body,
Swadhyaya means self-study.

Asanas enhance the health of body and mind.

Pranayama:

There are three main components of pranayama.

Pranayama benefits the nervous system and the mind.
There are different types of pranayama.
Withdrawal:
Pratyahara means turning the mind back from the internal external stimulus.
Withdrawal helps reduce cognitive reactions.
Assumption:
Assumption means stability of mind.
Assumption is when a person keeps his mind calm and stays focused on a single subject for a long time.
Attention:
Meditation is the concentration on an object or stimulus.
Concentration reveals the value of the person and the stimulus being one.
Samadhi:
Samadhi means the unification of the meditator and the stimulus of meditation.
Where all suffering ends.
When the mind becomes pure it is called Samadhi.
