  • When a person is not satisfied with an established system, he begins to oppose it.
  • Some sociologists have tried to define the antagonistic movement.
  • According to S. N. Egentet, "a protest movement is a movement that expresses dissatisfaction or a demand that is not satisfied."
  • This type of behavior is a mass movement, called an 'opposition movement'.
  • Opposing movement has only expression. They are not associated with any action.
  • These reactions are in the form of change.
  • Opposition movements are mainly associated with the following three things:
1. For dissatisfaction and injustice: People express dissatisfaction against certain events that take place in the society when it does not seem appropriate.
2. For demands: In the opinion of some individuals, some kind of incident should not happen in the society or if such an incident happens, demands are made against it.
3. For resistance demands: This kind of agitation takes place in the society when the traditional system is removed and a new system is established and people do not like it.
  • There is an event in the society which causes new demands.
  • E.g. For example, when the incidence of theft increases, people demand that arrangements be made to reduce it.
  • People make protest movements when economic and social problems increase in the society.
  • Such as agitation against price rise, corruption etc., agitation against atrocities against women etc.
  • Sometimes people feel deprived of their social order.
  • They oppose it when they are not asked about the reconstruction of society.
  • Opposition movement is found in all types of society, developed or underdeveloped.
  • The form of the antagonistic movement may be different in every society.
  • Opposition movement is more prevalent in a democratic society, as there is more freedom of expression in a democratic society.
  • Most of these types of movements are related to political events and are conducted by political parties.
