Question
Explain the important aspects of resonance with reference to $C O _3^{2-}$ ion.

Answer

The Lewis structure consisting of two single bonds and one double bond between carbon and oxygen atoms is not sufficient to show the actual structure of carbonate ion because according to it the length of three carbon-oxygen bonds should be different. But according to experimental results, the length of all three carbon oxygen bonds of carbonate ion is equal. Therefore, the actual structure of carbonate ion can be represented as the resonance hybrid of following three canonical structures (I, II and III).
