  • Five types of work motivation principles are given to motivate the employee towards work.
(1) The principle of necessity:
  • There are many types of human needs.
  • The employee works more enthusiastically if the need is more satisfied.
  • Abraham Maslow has given the theory of the hierarchy of necessity.
  • In which the work motivation of the employee gradually increases from the basic need of the person to the satisfaction of other needs.
(2) Goal setting principle:

  • There is a goal behind every type of behavior, so if the employee is assigned a task according to a set goal, the work motivation increases with constant effort towards achieving the goal.
(3) The principle of reinforcement:
  • Providing force for the desired activity is called reinforcement.
  • Work motivation is usually increased if constructive strength is received in return for work.
  • Skinner and Pavlov have conceptualized this principle.
  • Employee activity becomes stronger if the organization gives the desired beneficial reinforcement in return for the work.
  • For example, honoring, promoting, rewarding, paying special compensation if an employee works on a holiday, etc.
(4) The principle of equality:
  • Everyone wants people who do the same thing to get the same right, a share.
  • This is because work motivation is reduced if discriminated against in return for doing the same work.
  • E.g. When three employees in the same company have been playing the same role as clerk for five consecutive years, a five per cent pay hike to one employee and a 15 per cent pay hike to another employee will have a negative effect on those who have received less pay increase and reduce their work efficiency. (5) Expectation based theory:
