MCQ
For the electro chemical cell $M\left|M^{2+}\right| X \mid X^{2-}$ if $E_{\left(M^{2+} / M\right)}^0=0.46 V $ and  $ E_{\left(X / X^{2-}\right.}^0=0.34 V$ Which of the following is correct ?
  • A
    $E_{\text {cell }}=-0.80 V$
  • B
    $M + X \rightarrow M ^2+ X ^{2-}$ is a spontaneous reaction
  • C
    $M ^{2+}+ X ^{2-} \rightarrow M + X$ is a spontaneous reaction
  • D
    $E _{ ccll }=0.80 V$

Answer

$M \mid M^{+2} \| X / X^{2-}$
$E_{\text {cell }}^{o}=E_{M / M^{+2}}^{o}+E_{X / X^{-2}}^{o}$
$=-0.46+0.34$
$=-0.12 V$
As $E_{\text {cell }}^o$ is negative so anode becomes cathode and cathode become anode.
Spontaneous reaction will be $M^{+2}+X^{2-} \longrightarrow M+X$
