Question
How is food security affected during a calamity?

Answer

(i) When the country faces a natural disaster/calamity like earthquake, drought, flood, tsunami, widespread failure of crops cause famine.
(ii) Due to a natural calamity (like drought), total production of foodgrains decreases. It creates a shortage of food in the affected areas, which in turn leads to rise in food prices.
(iii) At high food prices, some people cannot afford to buy food. And if the situation continues for long, it may cause starvation, which if not controlled can also turn into famine.
