The opening of the domestic market due to globalization has increased the exposure of farmers and led to agrarian distress and cause for suicides. Scholars have cited several factors that have contributed to this:
Shift from traditional to commercial farming combined with withdrawal of the state assistance.
Decline in public investment in agriculture in the last two decades.
Competition from large global firms, cheap imports leading to low profits.
Crop failure, pest attack and drought.
Debt at very high interest rate.
Lack of access to water for crops, which forced the farmers to borrow money at exorbitant rates of interest.
