The poverty alleviation programmes initiated by the government have not met with much success.The reasons for the failure can be attributed to:
- Lack of proper implementation by the government officials who are corrupt, dishonest and untrained. Due to this, the benefits of the programme were appropriated by those who did not need it.
- Lack of active participation of the poor.
- It was difficult to identify the poorest, who are in most need of the help.
- Without the basic infrastructure, it is difficult to implement these programmes, especially in rural areas.
- Non-participation of the local level institutions in the implementation of the programmes.
- The funds allocated for these programmes were also not sufficient.
