MCQ
Two solution labelled as $3\, M\, HCl$ and $1M\, HCl$ are mixed in the ratio of $x : y$ by volume and the molarity of resulting solution is $1.5\, M.$ What is the molarity of the  resulting  solution if they are mixed in the ratio $y : x$ by volume ? ............ $\mathrm{M}$
  • A
    $4$
  • B
    $3$
  • C
    $2$
  • $2.5$

Answer

Correct option: D.
$2.5$
d
Case $-I$ $\left(\mathrm{v}_{1}: \mathrm{v}_{2}=\mathrm{x}: \mathrm{y}\right)$

$\mathrm{M}_{\mathrm{res}}=1.5=\frac{3 \times(\mathrm{x})+1 \times(\mathrm{y})}{\mathrm{x}+\mathrm{y}}$

$1.5 x+1.5 y=3 x+y$

$0.5 y=1.5 x ; y=3 x$

Case $-II$ $\left(\mathrm{v}_{1}: \mathrm{v}_{2}=\mathrm{y}: \mathrm{x}\right)$

$M_{\mathrm{res}}=\frac{3 \times(\mathrm{y})+1 \times(\mathrm{x})}{\mathrm{v}+\mathrm{x}}=\frac{3 \times(3 \mathrm{x})+\mathrm{x}}{3 \mathrm{x}+\mathrm{x}}=2.5$
