Question
Two thermometers are constructed in the same way except that one has a spherical bulb and the other has an elongated cylindrical bulb. Which one will respond quickly to the temperature changes? Why?

Answer

Thermometer with the cylindrical bulb. It is because the area of a cylinderical surface is greater than a spherical surface. Therefore, mercury in the cylindrical bulb reaches the temperature of the surrounding earlier.

A 100 kg gun fires a ball of 1 kg horizontally from a cliff of height 500 m . It falls on the ground at a distance of 400 m from the bottom of the cliff. Find the recoil velocity of the gun. (acceleration due to gravity $=10 ms^{-2}$ ).
A block of mass $100g$ is moved with a speed of $5.0m/s$ at the highest point in a closed circular tube of radius $10cm$ kept in a vertical plane. The cross-section of the tube is such that the block just fits in it. The block makes several oscillations inside the tube and finally stops at the lowest point. Find the work done by the tube on the block during the process.
Define Coefficient of Thermal Conductivity and derive its SI unit. Calculate the rate of loss of heat through a glass window of area $1000 cm^2$ and thickness $0.4 cm$ when temperature inside is $37^\circ C$ and outside is $-5^\circ C$. Coefficient of thermal conductivity of glass is $2.2 \times 10^{-3}cal \  s^{-1}\ cm^{-1}\ K^{-1}$.
Just as precise measurements are necessary in science, it is equally important to be able to make rough estimates of quantities using rudimentary ideas and common observations. Think of ways by which you can estimate the following (where an estimate is difficult to obtain, try to get an upper bound on the quantity): The total mass of rain-bearing clouds over India during the Monsoon.
A bat emits ultrasonic sound of frequency $1000 kHz$ in air. If the sound meets a water surface, what is the wavelength of (a) the reflected sound, (b) the transmitted sound? Speed of sound in air is $340m s^{–1}$ and in water $1486m s^{–1}$.
