Question
What are respiratory substrates? Name the most common respiratory substrate.

Answer

The compound which is oxidised in the respiratory process is called respiratory substrate. The most common substrates are carbohydrates which are converted into glucose before being used. In the absence of carbohydrates, fats and proteins also act as substrate. Fats are first converted into fatty acids and glycerol. Proteins are used when converted into amino acids.
