Question
What is triangle law of vector addition?
✓
Answer
Triangle law of vector addition: If two vectors describing the same physical quantity are represented in magnitude and direction, by the two sides of a triangle taken in order, then their resultant is represented in magnitude and direction by the third side of the triangle drawn in the opposite sense, i.e., from the starting point (tail) of the first vector to the end point (head) of the second vector. Let $\overrightarrow{ P }$ and $\overrightarrow{ Q }$ be the two vectors of same type taken in same order as shown in figure. $\qquad$ $\therefore$ Resultant vector will be given by third side taken in opposite order, i.e., $\overline{ OA }+\overline{ AB }=\overline{ OB }$ $\therefore \overrightarrow{ P }+\overrightarrow{ Q }=\overrightarrow{ R }$
