Introduction :
Linear organization is the most simple and ancient type of formation. It has been used in army so it is also known as Army Organization. The power and responsibilities are distributed in straight line from upward to downward levels.
Meaning of Liner Organization : As the distribution of power is straight line from upper level to lower level so it is known as Linear Organization each employees is answerable to immediate superior authority. Higher amount of power with lower level.
Formation of linear Organization :
The entire business is divided into different departments.
Departmental head is appointed for each department.
Each department officers are responsible to their chief officer.
The departmental heads is given all necessary power, authority and responsibilities.
This kind of organization is formed department wise and not function wise. So it is known as departmental organization.

Explanation of The Diagram :
The greatest power and authority is seen with organizational committee and they take value based decisions.
The general manager who is the main administrative head has necessary powers.
General manager ensures that the lower employees follow the given task and decision taken by organizational committee.
According to above diagram the organization is divided into three main departments, they are Manufacturing department / Production department, Administrative department and sales department.
As per the important work, officers are appointed of each department. Viz. Purchase officer, production officer or sales officer.
Supervisors, foreman, clerks etc. work under respective officers.
In liner organization power / authorities, flows from upper to lower level and accountability of work passes from lower level to upper level.
Suitable for: Liner organization is more suitable where the size of business unit is small, scope is limited, less problem of control and discipline.
Conclusion: Linear Organization is a simple and more favorable structure for small organization. This type of organization is divided into various division / departments. Thus work area is limited so the problem of control and discipline are also limited.
