Widow remarriage was practised in ancient India. but then it stopped. In medieval India, widows were not allowed to remarry. Thus, life would become very difficult for a woman who had lost her husband who was the earning member of the family. To remove this condition. it was essential to educate women, support them financially and allow them to remarry. Social reformers made Herculean efforts for this.
$(1)$ Prominent social re formers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar made Herculean efforts to promote widow remarriage. They printed books, pamphlets in favour of widow remarriage to bring awareness among people.
$(2)$ In Maharashtra, Mahadev Govind Ranade and his wife Ramabai Ranade as well as $(Brave Narmad)$] Jyotiba Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule as well as reformers like $R. G$. Bhandarkar and $B. M.$ Malabari campaigned for widow remarriage.
$(3)$ Great reformers of Gujarat like Narmad, Karsandas Mulji. Mahipatram Rooparam, Dalpatram. etc. also started agitations against child marriage and in support of widow remarriage. Prominent social reformer. Narmad, set an example by marrying a widow.
$(4)$ The famous Brahmo Samaji. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar advocated widow remarriage through his magazine 'Somprakash. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar believed that if girls who became widows at an early age had to live a very difficult life as a widow, then that was not the sign of a civilized society. In those times, lives of widows were very difficult. Due to his efforts. Governor General Lord Dalhousie introduced bill legalizing widow remarriage in $1856 \ AD$ This bill came to be known as the Widow a Remarriage Act of $1856 \ AD.$
