The Republic state was a significent feature of the ancient state system and governance system. Republic state means the state governed by the head elected directly or indirectly by the people. The common meaning of ‘Gana’ is ‘Mass’. The state governed with the help of more than one member can be called Republic state. In Post-Vedic period, there were some states where the head (the president or king) was selected by the people. Such states were called ‘Republic States’. The Lichchhavis of Vaishali, Shakyas of Kapilvastu, Videha of Mithila, Malla of Kushinara, etc. were included in them. In state administration of Republic states, each member was considered as the king. Members had all the powers of king. The decisions were taken by discussing all affairs and after passing through unanimously. Elders and youth were selected as members in the assembly of Republic. The president was elected for the state administration. Some tribes had joined together to form a union state to protect themselves from Monarchy, which was known as Vajji union Republic state.
