Question
A particle is in linear simple harmonic motion between two points, $A$ and $B, 10 cm$ apart. Take the direction from $A$ to $B$ as the positive direction and give the signs of velocity, acceleration and force on the particle when it is :
(a) at the end A,
(b) at the end B,
(c) at the mid-point of AB going towards A ,
(d) at 2 cm away from B going towards A ,
(e) at 3 cm away from $A$ going towards $B$, and
(f) at 4 cm away from $B$ going towards $A$.

Answer

Here A and B are in S.H.M. denote two ends in we do for velocity, the direction from A and B is considered the positive direction for acceleration and force, the positive direction is taken along AP and the negative direction is taken along BP

(a) Particle S.H.M. at end A while doing that it is momentarily at rest because it is the end of the motion, hence its velocity is zero, the acceleration is along the positive AP . The force is also in the positive direction because it is along AP , hence the answer is $0,+,+$.
(b) Velocity at end B is zero, here both acceleration and force are negative due to being along BP. Hence the answer is $0,-,-$.
(c) At the mid-point of AB , the particle moving towards A is at the middle position, and its tendency is to move along BA, i.e. in the negative direction, hence the velocity is negative and both acceleration and force are zero. Hence, the answer is-, 0,0 .
(d) 2 cm from B the particle is at Q towards A at distance and its the tendency is to move along QP, which is the negative direction therefore velocity, acceleration and force are all negative. Hence the answer is,-,-,- .
(e) 3 cm from A while going towards B at distance the particle is now at P . Which has a tendency to move along the PO for this reason velocity, acceleration and the forces are all positive. Hence the answer is,+,+,+ .
(f) 4 cm from B . The particle is moving towards distance A is at T and its tendency is to move along TP, which is the negative direction for velocity. Therefore velocity is negative, acceleration and force are also towards TP, for this reason both are debts. Hence the answer is,-,-,- .
