Question
  1. A student wants to use two $p-n$ junction diodes to convert alternating current into direct current. Draw the labelled circuit diagram she would use and explain how it works.
  2. Give the truth table and circuit symbol for $\text{NAND}$ gate.

Answer

  1. Working:
  2. For $+ve$ half cycle of $AC$ source, let $A$ be at $+ve$ potential and $B$ and $ve$ potential,
  3. So $, D_1$ will be forward biased and $D_2$ will be reversed biased. Itmeans currentwill only flow through $D_1$ and current will not flow through $D_2$.
  4. Output is obtained across $R_L.$
  5. For $-ve$ half cylce $, B$ will be at $+ve$ potential and point $A$ at $ve$ potential,
  6. So $, D_1$ will be reversed biased and $D_2$ will be forward biased Itmeans that current will only flow through $D_2$ and not through $D_1,$ output is obtained across $R_L$.
  7. This process is called full wave rectification and the device is called full wave rectifier.
  8. Truth Table:

  9. Logic Symbol:
