Question
Explain J. P. Das "PASS Theory."

Answer

According to J. P. Das and his associates, the extra ordinary structure of the brain is associated with the cognitive ability of an individual. J. P. Das and his associates presented a theory about intelligence which is known as "Pass Theory." The following cognitive abilities are included in this theory.
P - Planning
A- Attention arousal
S - Simultaneous processing
$ - Successive processing
(1) Planning : It is a cognitive ability with which we can decide how to solve our problem. We change our behaviour accordingly. It also includes process like setting up goals, evaluation of the result, use of use responses or feedback etc. The frontal lobe of the brain is responsible for this type of cognitive activity.
(2) Attention arousal : With this cognitive ability, an individual can decide towards which stimuli in the environment he would pay attention and ones which he would ignore. Those suffering from ADD (attention deficit disorder) are lacking in this type of cognitive ability. Attention and excitement are related to brain and thalamus in the brain.
(3) Simultaneous processing : This cognitive ability includes joining different stimulus together to form one complex situation. This ability is must for understanding language, For example : What is my Mother's, Father's, Son called as ? (Ans - maternal uncle). The occipital lobe and parietal lobe of the brain play important role for this ability.
(4) Successive processing : The ability to process the stimulates one after another is called successive ability. With the help of this ability, we attend words in succession while reading a printed sentence and while writing a sentence, We write one word after another. The frontal lobe and temporal lobe of the brain play important role in this activity.
