Question
Explain why, a salt which does not conduct electricity in the solid state becomes a good conductor in molten state.

Answer

Although solid ionic compounds are made up of ions but they do not conduct electricity in solid state. This is because in the solid ionic compound, the ions are held together in fixed positions by strong electrostatic forces and cannot move freely. However, when we dissolve the ionic solid in water or melt it, the crystal structure is broken down and ions become free to move and conduct electricity.
Thus, an aqueous solution of an ionic compound conducts electricity because there are plenty of free ions in the solution which are able to conduct electric current.

Two metals X and $Y$ form the salts $XSO _4$ and $Y _2 SO _4$, respectively. The solution of salt $XSO _4$ is blue in colour whereas that of $Y _2 SO _4$ is colourless. When barium chloride solution is added to $XSO _4$ solution, then a white precipitate Z is formed alongwith a salt which turns the solution green. And when barium chloride solution is added to $Y _2 SO _4$ solution, then the same white precipitate Z is formed alongwith colourless common salt solution.

X and Y are two human beings. The organ A in the reproductive system of X releases a mature gamete B once a month which goes into a tube-like structure C through a funnel-like opening. The organ D in the reproductive system of Y makes and releases gametes E which pass through a duct F and are introduced by an organ of Y, into the body of X. B and E fuse together in C to form a new cell G. The cell G divides repeatedly to form a ball of cells H which gets embedded in the lining of organ I of reproductive system of X where it grows and develops into a baby.
