Flood Situation Grim in Kolhapur
Kolhapur, 22 July: Helicopters were pressed into service and the Army deployed for relief and rescue work in Kolhapur city and the surrounding districts as rains lashed the area for the fourth day.
"The water levels in the Panchganga and other rivers is rising rapidly. Train and road traffic has been disrupted completely," said a rescue worker. Shivraj Patil. "Ten motorcycles and 2 cars were washed away yesterday when a bridge collapsed. Rainwater has entered the houses in low-lying areas and life has been completely disrupted. The market places are flooded. We are trying our best to rescue people."
There was news that several villages had been marooned and thus completely cut off, with no electricity or drinking water. Carcasses of animals could be seen in the swirling waters. Relief is pouring in from other parts of the state and country.
