The behavioural solutions to save environment are mentioned below :
(i) Voluntary Simplicity : The saying "A contented man is always happy," Everyone should practise it voluntarily to make minimum use of technology and natural resources. All the countries of the world should use earth's natural resources effectively, wisely and equitably. In order to live a stable and balanced life, we should avoid use of more than what we require. The environmental 23 problems are the concerns of the whole world therefore everybody must think and move in that direction. (ii) Encourage Concrete Actions : People should be encouraged to reduce the use of devices which consume natural resources and make use of recycled products. We should use car pool or public transport system to reduce air pollution. Informing people about some products and services and their usefulness is not enough. They need to be encouraged to make appropriate behavioural activities. People need to participate in the community programmes to curtail the use of natural wealth and efficient use of it. The collective approach in' recycling of things is more effective than personal approach.
(iii) Providing Behavioural Norms: Government organizations should provide guidance to the people and motivate them regarding enforcement of environmental regulations and standards. The regulations and norms in this regard should be explained to people clearly. For example :It is necessary for vehicle owners to get their vehicle checked for the pollution level and get PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate. The fuel should be without lead. The emission norms for the control of the smoke should be made stricter for the vehicle manufacturers. It is a good sign that now a days, there is a widespread use of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles in big cities.
Burning of waste and dry leaves in open is prohibited but it is not strictly observed. The government should give more authority to the enforcement agencies for the strict enforcement of the norms. The production and use of chloroflurocarbons should be stopped gradually. Electric cars and other vehicles powéred by zero pollution fuel cells should be used.
(iv) Organized Group Activities :The another important approach to monitor and control the environment is proper use of group activities. It is necessary that the organized activism cure the environmental damage done by power houses, transport corporations, co-operative institutions, powerful industrial organizations etc. and keep them under control. The government and other powerful organizations should ignore individual protest and complaints in this regard. Group activism proves to be an effective tool to control these threats. Public Interest litigations also prove to be effective in this regard. The Supreme Court of India has issued orders for strict observance of fuel norms, phasing out of old and inefficient vehicles, conversion of commercial vehicles to CNG etc. Orders have been issued by the Supreme Court to make the rivers pollution free. Mass media also plays important role to create awareness and to promote necessary activities towards the creation of healthy environment.
