Question
Explain the five mechanisms of Bronfenbrenner environment.

Answer

  • Bronfenbrenner has a different approach to the environment.
  • Bronfenbrenner attempts to explain a bird's nest-like environment in sequence through the concept of five systems:
(a) Micro System:
  • What a person lives in is his microcosm.
  • These include elements such as a person's family, peers, school, and neighborhood. Most of the interactions in this system take place with parents, peers and friends.
(b) Meso system:
  • This system consists of various micro systems.
  • E.g. A child's family experiences can have an effect on his interactions with friends or teachers.
  • Children of a married family have difficulty adjusting to their friends.
(c) Exo system:
  • This system indicates the effects of the experience of situations not very close to the person on the people close to him.
  • E.g. A person's experience in the workplace affects the interaction of the child with the spouse.
  • Due to a dispute with a superior in the office, a person comes home and gets angry with his wife or child.
(d) Cultural system (Macro system):
  • This system is associated with the culture in which the person lives.
  • Culture includes beliefs, values, customs, etc.
  • Which is followed by most of the people in the society.
(e) Chromo system:
  • Chronological system consists of behavioral patterns that are associated with reactions to life-changing changes in a socio-historical context.
  • E.g. A person is enterprising and optimistic when he is young but his activities and ambitions decrease with age.
