When the ionic product of a solution exceeds the solubility product, the solution becomes supersaturated and precipitation of salts occurs. Solubility product represents the maximum possible concentration of the solute which can be dissolved in the solution to form a saturated solution. When the ionic product exceeds this value, any excess amount will precipitate out as long as the solution cannot hold it.
