Question
Explain Lead Storage Cell.

Answer

Lead Storage Cell : This is the most commonly used battery in automobiles. Each battery consists of a number of voltaic cells connected in series. Three to six cells are generally combined to get 6 to 12 V battery. In each cell the anode is a grid of lead packed with finely

spongy lead and the cathode is a grid of lead packed with $PbO _2$.
During the working of the cell, the concentration of $H _2 SO _4$ decreases as sulphate ions are consumed to form $PbSO _4$. With the decrease in the concentration of $H _2 SO _4$ the density of the sulution also decreases. When the density of $H _2 SO _4$ becomes less than $1.20 g cm ^{-3}$, the battery needs reaching.
